Meet one of our incredible teachers, Deb! ⁠

Deb is passionate about all kinds of movement and exercise has always been a big part of her life. One of Deb's goals is to not only age gracefully but with an able body and mind to whatever degree possible. ⁠
⁠
Movement and self-care are critical to well-being. Deb enjoys challenging/vigorous types of activity and also relaxing/calming stillness. Teaching aerobics, spinning, and cross-country skiing has brought her many years of enjoyment and mobility. She is also thankful to have an ongoing Iyengar yoga practice to complement her other passions: cycling & hiking. ⁠

⁠Did you know that the word "asana" means steady, comfortable pose? You hear "asana" at the end of all Sanskrit pose names - Uttanasana, Adho Mukha Svansana, Virabhadrasana, Tadasana, etc...⁠

One of the main values of a physical yoga practice is bringing the body and mind into a state of steadiness and comfort, even when your body is challenged out of its comfort zone. This is "asana."⁠
⁠
When the mind gets distracted by the five senses or the body starts to struggle because of sensations felt (like pain or discomfort) then you are not actually practicing "asana" anymore. At that point it's time to either refocus the mind, see if your breath can assist you back into steady and comfortable, or release out of the pose. ⁠
⁠
In our asana practice we tend to come in and out of this state of being, which is why we call it a Yoga Practice not a Yoga Perfect!⁠
